A Triplet Opals are sourced in SA. They are a manufactured gemstone composed of three layers: a thin piece of natural opal, a dark backing (often a black material) and a clear protective dome of glass or resin on top giving a polish look. This construction enhances their colour and brilliance. 

A Doublet Opals are sourced from Queensland and consist of only two layers: a thin piece of natural opal and a dark backing (often a black material)
